Election Aftermath

I think yesterday's results require a corollary to Lincoln's famous quote:

"Apparently you can fool enough of the people enough of the time to put a fraud and a conman in the White House."

Vote Early, Vote Often

Not really, of course. But I do urge everyone who reads this blog in the US to vote today. In most areas, I realize this is an "off-year" election, with just municipal or county positions on the ballot. But, contrary to most beliefs, these are the positions that most affect our daily lives--the ones that determine our local tax rates, our schools, our roads, etc. I know my local precinct will probably see only a 10 percent turnout--and I wish I could go to every door in the community and say, "Unless you show up at the polls today, don't come to me in six months complaining about your trash pickup or the pothole in the road or whatever. Where were you when we choosing the people in charge of these things?"

Apologies

One of the things I have learned in the four years since I returned to dressing is not to be too settled in your plans...because there are a host of things that can change them. My intention to dress every day this week fell apart today when my wife had to work from home because of transportation problems. Now I have to decide whether to squeeze in two outfits tomorrow or just postpone one of the five ensembles meant for this week to another time.

Next week may be a bit bumpy, too--I know I won't be able to dress on my usual Tuesday schedule (I'm working the polls on Election Day), so it will all depend on whether I have another weekday off. (I may not...since I also have the weekend off for performances of my current play.)

The Coming Week

It looks like I'll be dressing on Monday and Friday; Tuesday I will be working at my local polling place, signing in voters.

I try to keep this blog unpolitical (though I suspect my leanings still come through), so all I'll say right here is that this is an important election. Everybody has at least a congressperson to vote for--get out and do so. Whether you think the GOP or the Dems belong in charge, I have one rule--if you didn't vote, you don't get to complain about the outcome.

Vote!

I've never done this in all my years on the web, but...

It's a week until election day and I'm urging every single one of you to go out and vote. I don't care who you're supporting (personally, I'm supporting Obama), just go out and vote. Don't tell me you're in a non-battleground state like California and it won't matter...there are Congressional and Senate and local elections and state and local referenda, propositions and initiatives. They're all important.

Oh--if you are in California--there's one position I urge you to take: Vote No on Prop 8, the anti-gay marriage proposition. I'm pretty sure most of you are in favor of gay marriage, but don't skip voting on this one. That's just what the bigots want you to do...they're counting on lots of people who will only go into the booth to hit their choice on the top of the ticket and look no further...because they've energized their base not to do that.
